This seminar will situate current controversies (such as medical aid in dying, reproductive justice, disability rights, and enhancement technologies) against the longer history of American medicine and religion, most visibly Christianity. We will consider the extent to which values derived from Christian belief inform contemporary debates, and whether they still have relevance in a pluralistic society. The class is intended for students with broad interests in health care, religion, and the challenges of moral debate in pluralistic society.
